Getting Northwest Registered Agent working, in order

You've decided. From here we stop selling it to you and start getting it done. Tick things off as you go, this browser remembers, no account needed.

0 of 8 steps everyone does · next: Decide what you are forming, and where

First

Get set up properly

Ten minutes of thinking here saves a week of rebuilding later.

  1. 01

Decide what you are forming, and where

    about 20 min

Why now, You have decided to form the business properly rather than trade as yourself.

Decide whether you are forming an LLC or a corporation, and which state you are registering in. For almost every owner serving customers in one state, that is the state you actually live and work in.

Filing in the wrong state, or as the wrong entity, costs money to unwind and can leave you registered twice.

Done when, You can say the entity type and the state out loud without hedging.

You'll know it worked when you have written both down.

    • Decide the entity type and state

Use this before you file anything, when you are not sure which entity or which state.

Decide LLC or corporation, and which state, by being asked the right questions.

Asks about where you live, who else is involved and whether you will hire, then recommends the structure.

Before you build

Work out what you're building

This part happens in ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, whichever you already use. You come back with one clear request to hand over.

  1. 02

Check the name is actually free

    about 25 min

Why now, You know the entity type and the state.

Search your state's business name database for the exact name and near misses, and check the matching domain and social handles at the same time.

A rejected name delays the filing, and a name that is free at the state but taken as a domain causes a rename later anyway.

Done when, One name you are confident about, and a second choice.

You'll know it worked when the state search returns no conflicting active entity.

    • Check the name before you file

Use this before filing, and before buying a domain.

Pressure-test the name before you pay to file it.

Gives you the exact official searches to run, and the near-miss names to watch for.

  2. 03

Collect every answer the form will ask for

    about 20 min

Why now, You have a name you are confident about.

Write down the exact legal name, the business address you are willing to use, who the owners or members are and their share, who signs, and what the business actually does in one line.

Most filings stall because one detail is missing halfway through, and the form does not wait politely.

Done when, A single list with no blanks left in it.

You'll know it worked when you could hand the list to someone else and they could complete the filing.

    • Prepare every answer the filing asks for

Use this the day you intend to file.

Have every answer ready before you open the filing form.

Turns what you know into a filled-in checklist, with the undecided parts marked.

Then

Get something that actually works

One real, working version, then protect it before you change anything else.

  1. 04

    File the entity through Northwest

    about 30 min

Why now, You have the name and every detail the form asks for.

Start the filing from the Northwest page, using the details you collected. Their registered agent address is included, so you do not have to publish your home address or arrange an agent separately.

Every state requires a registered agent with a real address in that state. Doing it in the same step is what keeps this to one job instead of three.

Done when, The filing is submitted and you have a confirmation.

You'll know it worked when you can see the submitted filing in your Northwest account.

  2. 05

Get your EIN from the IRS

    about 20 min

Why now, The state has approved the entity.

Apply for the EIN directly with the IRS. It is free and issued immediately during their online hours. Do not pay anyone for this.

Without the EIN you cannot open a business bank account, run payroll or file properly.

Done when, You have the EIN confirmation letter saved somewhere you can find it.

You'll know it worked when the letter shows your legal entity name exactly as filed.

  3. 06

    Register with your state

    about 45 min

Why now, You have the approved entity and the EIN.

Complete your state's business registration and open whichever tax accounts apply to you, sales tax, employment, industry-specific. In Washington this produces your UBI number; other states name it differently.

The entity filing alone does not register you to collect tax or employ anyone. This is the step people discover late, usually from a letter.

Done when, You hold your state registration number and know which taxes you are registered for.

You'll know it worked when the state account shows your business as active.

    • Work out what you still have to register for

Use this once the state has approved the filing.

Find out what else you have to register for, before a letter tells you.

Asks about your trade and state, then lists the registrations and licences in the order they block you.

Only if your build needs it

Add what this particular build requires

None of these apply to every build. Each one says when it applies to yours.

  1. 07

Sort out city, county and trade licences

Only if your build needs itabout 45 min

Why now, You are registered at state level.

Applies when Your trade is licensed, bonded, or your city or county requires a business licence.

Check your city and county for a general business licence, and check whether your trade needs its own licence, bond or insurance before you take work.

Local rules are where trades get caught. A contractor licence or bond missing at the first job is an expensive way to find out.

Done when, You know exactly which local licences apply to you and have applied for them.

You'll know it worked when you can name each licence and its status.

Before real people use it

Check it, then let people in

Not needed while you're still experimenting. Needed before anyone else relies on it.

  1. 08

    Open the business bank account

    about 60 min

Why now, You have the approved filing, the EIN and your state registration.

Open the business account with the formation documents, the EIN letter and your state registration to hand. Then stop using any personal account for the business entirely.

Mixed money is the single most common reason a set of books becomes expensive to fix, and it weakens the protection you just paid for.

Done when, The account is open and every business payment routes through it.

You'll know it worked when a payment has landed in the business account.

  2. 09

Diary the dates that keep it alive

    about 15 min

Why now, The business is formed and banking.

Put the annual report date, the registered agent renewal and your tax filing dates in a calendar with a reminder a month before each.

A missed annual report puts the entity out of good standing, and the first you usually hear about it is when a bank or a customer checks.

Done when, Every recurring date is in a calendar with a reminder on it.

You'll know it worked when the reminders exist and are set for a real date.

    • Build the yearly reminder calendar

Use this once, in the week you finish setting up.

Turn the yearly obligations into reminders you will actually see.

Produces a dated table of annual report, agent renewal and tax dates.
